Advent With Second and First Coming, oil on linen, 36" by 48"
ADVENT: SECOND AND FIRST COMING
Advent begins with the second coming of Christ, showing His return in the clouds in the same way He left the earth on His ascension. Here is the consummation of time as He comes in glory to judge the living and the dead. There is great tumult – even in the sky with its shooting stars – as the signs of the end times have steadily grown more clear.
This is juxtaposed to the first coming which enables one to be ready. In the first coming the long-awaited Emmanuel (God be with us), the Incarnation of the Word-Made-Flesh is still in the womb of Mary as they with Joseph are on the road to Bethlehem. In the landscape are sheep without a shepherd.
The colors of Advent are a dark bluish purple suggestive of a time of sobriety and expectation. The road to Bethlehem is also a personal/communal journey toward joy to meet a King who has humbly come as a baby to share in our humanity.
